I suggest you watch the series before reading further their are spoilers to the entire plot of the show, though it is not in depth it will still ruin some great parts.
Over the garden wall is a 10 episode cartoon network mini series that ran from November 3 to 7 in 2014. It was created by Patrick Mchale. Originally he pitched it in 2005, but it never went anywhere, he called it Tome of the unknown. He published a short by that name on cartoon network on May 19 2013. (which can be found on YouTube and also in this post) It's name makes a cameo in the last episode of the series on a book a character is reading.
Over the garden wall is about two half brothers named Wirt (the oldest) and Gregory. The first episode starts with the two brothers walking threw the woods(known as the unknown), talking about a good name for their frog. when Wirt suddenly asks Greg where they are and how they ended up there, they have an argument witch is suddenly interrupted by a talking blue bird. You would think that maybe this is normal in this universe until Wirt questions how the bird can talk. The blue bird leaves and everything gets weirder after that. The two brothers learn that in the woods there is a terrible creature known only at The Beast(told to them by the woodsman).
This is the antagonist of the series who follows behind the two brothers, closely watching them. We soon find out that he is getting the woodsman to continue keeping a lantern lit to keep his daughters soul safe and with him (just as long as the lantern is lit by the edlewood trees oil).
As the show continues the brothers encounter very strange and mystical people. Like walking talking skeletons, a school for animals, a girl possessed by an evil spirit and controlled by 'auntie whispers' bell, people from entirely different times. They are all supernatural is some sense or another. And the brothers, Wirt with his clumsy nervousness and Greg with his spontaneous nature always manage to help theses people or things with their problems. As the show goes you start to see Wirt losing hope of getting home.
On the last few episodes we find out that they ended up in the unknown by falling off a garden wall in their local cemetery , almost getting hit by a train and falling into a lake below, on Halloween night which certainly explains their strange attire( Greg being an elephant, while Wirt's costume being still not known).

As the last episode plays through we find out the edlewood trees are actually made from lost souls of people who gave up, and Greg gave up himself to save Wirt. However Wirt and Beatrice(the blue bird) jump in and save him, and with help from the woodsman find out that the beasts life force is in the lantern not the woodsman's daughter. Our heroes part with the assumption that the woodsman has killed the beast.
The final episode ends with Writ awakening in the lake and swimming himself and his brother to shore and promptly passing out the last thing herd is "Over here, their over here". The screen curs and the boys wake up in a hospital all of their worries are righted. It then shows us the endings of everyone, Beatrice and her family back as humans, the woodsman back with his daughter and everyone else.
The whole show is beautifully done with wonderful art work and music. An amazing story line that keeps you wondering and lovable characters in all their flaws.
In the end, it wont disappoint you. People are still trying to come up with theories on what exactly the 'Unknown' is, is it the in-between of the afterlife, is it the afterlife its-self and is the beast simply Death come to take the brothers to their death? Is it just a hallucination? Is it a real place or an alternate universe? Never the less it is one of my favorite cartoons, witch I will promptly be watching this old hallows eve.
